~ Our class began first grade in 1945 at Central Elementary, Trinity Catholic School, North Ocala School, North Marion, Reddick, Citra, Anthony, Fellowship, Summerfield, Belleview, Weirsdale, East Marion and many other small schools around Marion County as well as schools in many other states. From these many schools we would come together to complete the 12th grade at Ocala High School. Sad to say, we lost some classmates along the way and we'll always remember them and ask, what might have been.
~ 210 students came together in 1957 to complete our 12th grade and celebrate graduation on the night of June 10, 1957. We were the first class to graduate from Ocala High School's new building. From that night, we begin to scatter in search of fulfilling our dreams and making our mark in the world. What world did we face -- Britain exploded its first hydrogen bomb, a Russian satellite was launched into space -- the first man-made object ever to leave the Earth's atmosphere, President Eisenhower had been returned to the White House, Velcro is patented, Eveready produces "AA" size alkaline batteries for use in "personal transistor radios", B-52 bombers begin full-time flying alert in case of USSR attack, the Frisbee is nationally marketed, only one thousand computers were sold, The first large scale American nuclear power plant goes into operation, the average American production worker is now making $82.32 a week, frozen pizza hits the supermarket shelves, the internal pacemaker is invented, the first microwave-cooking article is published, a U.S. runner, breaks the 4 minute mile, a postage stamp cost 3 cents, gasoline was 24 cents a gallon, at age 18 all young men were required to register for the military draft.
~ In 2007, we celebrate our graduation's 50th reunion by gathering to renew old friendships, catch up on the past, discuss the future, enjoy good fellowship and remember those no longer with us. This website serves the purpose to continue to keep all of us informed and to maintain the 'Class of '57 Network'. Now that we are in our senior years with our careers laid to rest and our children forging out their niche in the world, we have more time to stay in touch. Join the network classmates, supply your e-mail address to this website's webmaster.
